Yippee! Picture me dancing a jig around the room with a smile of glee painted on my very smug face. Why? I have finally finished my Greengate style blanket that I started way back in July……and I LOVE it!
Row after row of Drops Paris Cotton loveliness that feels so substantial and luxurious it was well worth the effort and time.
It is HUGE.
Pictured above on the bed in one of our spare bedrooms which is 5’6″ wide, it makes a decent throw but it completely covers a single bed!
The original article and pattern (found here) are in Swedish and the Google translation was a little confusing but, with some crochet experience, I managed to come up with a workable version of the pattern in English which I can now share with you – just click on the link at the bottom of the page to download it!
I particularly love the lettuce-leaf edging – time-consuming but it adds a beautiful texture to it, I think.

Whilst it may look complicated and rather daunting, the main body of the blanket actually consists of nothing other than treble crochet (US double) in plain rows and granny stripe. It’s the winning combination of colours that make it so successful.
If you would like to make your own blanket, I have included a pattern for you to download and print off. It is my own interpretation of the google translation (in the Swedish edition of Homes & Gardens) and may not be perfect but worked well for me!

Wow, that is a LOT of counted stitches!! Lol! How long did that take you? I have zero patience for knitting or crochet so I’m always impressed when someone tackles something huge. 🙂 looks great!

On and off since mid July – but I have made SO many other things in between! Each row took about half an hour to crochet; there are 170 rows (plus the edging) so the body of the blanket took roughly 85 hours to make:)

I have been slacking these last couple of days but your photos have reminded me of the pleasure and excitement of a finished project, especially one which has a lot of time invested in it.Your effort has definitely been rewarded well, It really does look fab !

It’s 100% cotton so it’s very heavy, which is nice on a bed I think – the extra weight makes you feel warmer. Thanks for your kind comment:)

I adore this greengate afghan. I am going to start it today. I notice on the pattern when you get half way finished after the 60 etc rows you say reverse pattern until the end. Right before you type up the edging. Can you tell me what you mean by reverse the pattern? Sorry if I sound like a dunce. I just want to get the pattern right and not screw it up. It is so pretty. Luckily I have all the colors here to at least start it before I go for my yarn run tomorrow. 🙂 Thank you so very much for sharing it will us at no charge. After row 85 – next row is 84, 83, 82 etc. right back to row no.1. I made a few changes as I went – you will get used to the pattern after a few rows and may have to do the same. Row 49, for example, I pencilled in “As row 47”. Only a minor adjustment at start of row to keep pattern right, but easy to do. Mine turned out OK! All I ask is to see a photo of the finished item – enjoy:)

Wow, stunning work. Over a year ago I stumbled upon the Swedish pattern and could not wait to get started. Unfortunately my colours were not quite right and even with Google translate the pattern did not read right so I never completed it. I would love to have another go at this, seeing how beautiful your blanket has turned out you have inspired me to have another go. Did you use the same Drops Paris shades they state in the Swedish pattern?

Okay Sheila I am sitting here stuck. I have done the first four rows of the light blue. I am now on the row of the three dc then one dc of yellow … repeat until the end of the row. I know how to do the three dc in the blue , skip the next stitch … three dc in the blue etc. How do I put the yellow dc in there. I use the US terms. Am I supposed to do the yellow dc skip three or what?? Help lovey!!!

Hi Robin – Start the row with 2dc in blue but, as you put the yarn round to pull through the last two loops, draw through the yellow instead. Work 1dc in yellow followed by 3dc in blue working around the yellow yarn which trails along the back. There’s no skipping of stitches!!!! Does that help?

Here I am dancing the happy dance like I have no common sense! Finally I got half of the row done that has the three blue dc and one yellow dc repeat** done. It only took me about two weeks. LOL With a ton of head scratchin, fussin and a fumin I finally got it !! I was bound and determined that this yarn and hook were not going to beat me. I am so thrilled you would think I was going to get gold. Thank you so much Sheila. I am so darn happy. 🙂

I have only just seen this blanket Sewchet and it is absolutely beautiful! I think it will be my next crochet blanket pattern, but do you think I could make it with acrylic or wool yarn as I’m not keen on cotton thread? I like blankets to be snuggly and warm 🙂

This a lovely blanket. I will start this as my next project. I am still new at crocheting…only been doing it for a year…but have done bunch of scarves and 2 baby blankets would you say this is something a somewhat beginner can tackle?

Hi! I love your blanket! I am the cotton queen and do everything in cotton so this is right up my ally. I ordered my yarn but they were out of the green- I think- it looks like you used the pistachio? Is this correct? Also which pink did you use? I ordered a few different pinks just to be safe!
