Sunday Sevens #26

Here we are again for another Sunday Sevens post – seven photos that make up part of your week but are not worthy of a dedicated blog post.

To join in, check out Nat’s post over at Threads and Bobbins where she tells you all about it.

1. Tess presiding, as I finish the second sleeve on my jumper – just the blocking to do now!

2. The ‘Cockatoo’ fabric and wallpaper arrived for The Boys’ bedroom redecoration.

This is the mood board – units from Ikea due to arrive this week then they’ll have proper storage at last!

Will it be enough to enable them to keep their bedroom tidy? I doubt it…..

3. I bought this sewing book for No.2 Son (the one who likes GBSB more than anything!).

We are going to adapt some of the more obviously girly patterns to make them suitable for a nine year old boy which made me think – why are all sewing books aimed at girls?

My first sewing book

His first make was this Monster Plushy.

He needs supervision but does all the sewing himself.

Funnily enough, whilst he is VERY much a boy, he chose pink fabric from my stash for both projects.

I suppose he sees Hubby wearing pink so doesn’t consider it a girl’s choice and just likes it.

His second make was this pair of Kissing Doves which he wants to hang in his bedroom.

4. He also finished off his crochet Granny Square blanket this weekend.

He chose all the colours as he went and framed it with three rows of blue to finish.

Isn’t it great?

5. Tulips – my favourite Spring flower. These were £2-00 a bunch in Morrisons so I treated myself:)

6. First Primroses spotted in the field- beautiful.

7. Hubby cooking Sunday Lunch.

Is it just me, or does food always taste much nicer when somebody else has done the cooking?

Hope you had a great week – enjoy what’s left of the weekend!

  1. What a brilliant collection of photos! I’m in awe of how talented your son is! That blanket is amazing, and I just love the kissing birds. I completely agree, I think even a sandwich made by someone tastes much nicer than making it yourself 🙂

  4. WOW ! Your son did such an awesome job on his blanket. I love to see young boys picking up such wonderful hobbies. The boys room will look wonderful when it is all finished. You are such a wonderful momma. 🙂 The tulips are beautiful. I splurged and got me a big pot of tulips around Valentines day. Right now I am enjoying some beautiful purple, pink and red primroses. I love the feel of their leaves. They remind me of African Violets. You will definately have to do a proper ta-dahhh post for your jumper. I can’t wait to see it. Your hubby definately treats you like a queen. It is wonderful having dinner made by someone you love. 🙂 Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Lots of love and hugs to you and your awesome family.

    • I know, crochet and sewing are traditionally thought of as girls’ pastimes, aren’t they? As soon as he started asking if I could teach him, I jumped at the chance to pass on the skills. Flowers make me smile – my husband always buys me a big bunch of lilies on pay day, but I couldn’t resist the tulips in the meantime. I will definitely do a proper post on the jumper – they’re such a labour of love, aren’t they? Thanks for your lovely comments, as always:)

  6. I love that crochet – good lad. I think the gendering of the sewing book female is the same as gendering books on science male – lack of thought from publishers. Drives me nuts. It’s like the new range of girly lego. WTF – girls like lego, they don’t need Lego Friends – argh.

  7. I just want to give you a great big hug and a high five for allowing and encouraging your sons creativity! That is so wonderful to see. Maybe a collection of his work and choices could form the basis for a book of handcrafts for boys 🙂 Love this little peek into your life, thank you!

    • Was just thinking that there’s definitely space for a ‘Crafting For Boys’ type book in the marketplace! Thanks for the positive comments – you’d be surprised how many people still think it’s odd to allow a little boy to indulge in ‘female’ pursuits:)

      • That’s the issue really – I’m not surprised! I was a teacher for thirty years in an alternative education system that had boys and girls doing all creative and practical activities together. They all did woodwork, gardening, handwork and cooking. They mostly all graduate with a practical bent and a ‘can-do’ inclusive attitude. Creativity and practicality is lacking in the modern education system – and world at large – and that is why I am so very happy to see your nurturing of your boy’s creativity – and his wonderful work! 🙂

      • Our school also taught both sexes all disciplines, but I have to say, although I was just as good at metalwork and woodwork, the traditionally feminine crafts are the ones I continued with. The thing is, I suppose, ‘soft’ crafts are much more instant, portable and pick-upable which is a good thing for youngsters with a limited attention span! I shall continue to encourage him as long as he wants!

  8. Your son is amazing and so talented for his young age – You must be very proud of him! I bet he’s chuffed to bits every time he makes something, I reckon he’ll give Kaffe Fassett some competition in the future 🙂 Love the new bedroom designs I’m sure the boys will love it when its all done!

  9. So impressed with your son’s makes. That crochet granny blanket is fantastic. I hope my little guy gets my crafty gene. I am reassured that although I have a son I can still pass on my passion to him. The similarities… my hubby loves to wear pink too and he is a chef so he is always cooking for me. Lucky us.

  13. I’m not so which I’d find most difficult, getting my husband to cook a whole meal or teaching my son to crochet! He tried knitting last year but it just looked like a really intricate lacy a number! You have a very talented family, mine are only interested in balls… Foot, golf or cricket! 😀

  15. Wow! I can’t believe your son can sew and crochet too!!! Great work, by him. Really lovely. It’s brilliant to pass on the crafts to the next generation.
