In my last Sunday Sevens post I mentioned that I treated myself to a little something from the Apple store in Exeter.
It was an iPad mini, which I’ve wanted for a while now, ever since I injured my neck and had to close my photographic business in November (years of carrying heavy equipment around my neck).
Since I no longer have to sit in my office and turn my huge iMac on every day, I thought it would be nice to have something more portable so that I could blog or browse the web from the lounge/garden/kitchen – anywhere but shut away on my own in the office.
Although I also bought a separate Logitech keyboard which affords a little protection to the iPad, I couldn’t wait to pop into my sewing room and whip up a quick and easy sleeve.
The same method could be applied when making a sleeve for any tablet, mobile ‘phone or kindle.
Here’s what I did: –
Measure the device, add a seam allowance to all sides and cut out the following pieces.
- 1 front
- 1 back
- 2 lining
- 2 wadding
I used scraps and had to have different fabrics for the front and back.
Start by sandwiching a piece of wadding between the front and a lining piece. Pin all layers together and baste all the way around.
Repeat with the back.
Trim any excess wadding.
Cut enough bias binding to go around all four edges plus an extra length for the opening edge. You can use ready made or follow my tutorial on how to make your own bias binding.
I used an old tea towel!
Pin the bias binding to a short edge of the back and stitch in place.
Repeat with the front.
Pin the front to the back and baste together around three sides, leaving the top opening free.
Fold under the raw edge on the remaining bias binding.
Pin the bias binding to the sleeve around the three sides, enclosing all the layers and stitch in place.
Not my neatest piece of work as it was only for me and whipped up in a hurry whilst supper was cooking, but it was completely free using bits from my stash.
You could spend more time and make it more polished, especially if it is to be a gift for someone.
And there you have it – a quick and easy sleeve for your iPad, iPad mini, mobile ‘phone, laptop, tablet, kindle……….

The floral fabric was the very last of my favourite Clarke & Clarke fabric, ‘Rosetta’. I certainly got the most out of it though – it was only a one metre length and I’ve lost count of the little projects that it has played a part in.

Pretty and practical as well as new life for some of your scraps too! 🙂

There is absolutely nothing left of that ‘Rosetta’ fabric, not even a single patchwork square. The metre I bought went a long way but I love it so much I may have to buy some more.

It’s so satisfying when you have a fabric which fits lots of different projects and every scrap gets used up – the down side is when you can’t get more of the same – hopefully you shouldn’t have that problem 🙂

That was a nice present to yourself! I love little projects where you can use up scraps of favourite fabrics so they don’t get wasted.

I can’t throw anything away, not even the tiniest scrap! I even use pieces less than an inch square to make bunting on handmade birthday cards:)

What a great make! I can’t believe you whipped it up so quickly! Such pretty fabrics too, so it’s a bonus that they were in your stash. I’ll consider making one of these as a gift, it looks great as well as very fit for purpose 🙂

Everybody has at least one gadget nowadays, so these make a really thoughtful gift, especially if personalised to the recipients taste.

Congratulations on your new addition – hope it works out well for you. Know you’ll enjoy your lovely fabric sleeve almost as much as the contents!

Love it! Might I ask why you decided on this rather than a computer? Apple’s are small & light & would have their keyboard attached. Still too much weight?

Size was the deciding factor – an iPad mini is much smaller than a laptop. Also, it’s just for browsing, I can use my IMac in the other room if I need to do computery stuff:)

Ah, yes ~ see your point. Have debated same for self, but have leaned more toward doing more than browsing whilst lolling about with me feet up. (Writing, tho’ I hate typing passionately ~ lol!)

Mr H-L has a full size iPad but I wanted my own and the mini is just the job. You know you’ll have to make a cover now, don’t you?

It’s gorgeous fabric, isn’t it? I’ll probably buy some more because a little goes a long way, especially if it’s used as an accent to another fabric.

This would be very tricky as there are a lot of people that do it. I would suggest putting together a publication and taking it to a publisher or putting it on Amazon as an eBook for people to buy. How about selling on the black market?
