Sunday Sevens is a weekly blog series started by Nat from Threads & Bobbins. Why not pop over and see how you can join in?
- Disaster – my hand knitted socks have a hole in them! My big toe is so much longer than any of the others that all my socks get thrown away eventually because they get holes in them. There’s no way I’m throwing these away a) because I made them b) because I invested a considerable amount of time in their creation c) because they are quite simply the most comfortable socks I have ever worn.
Guess I’ll have to buy a darning mushroom:(
2. We had some late Christmas presents in the post all the way from America (thanks Robin!) – The Boys were thrilled as you can see from their expressions.
3. This beautiful pheasant has decided it’s safer in our garden than in the fields beyond. I managed to snap it on my iPhone on full zoom, hence the poor quality.
4. I’ve started another bobble hat for a cousin who saw it on Facebook and fancied a pink one.
5. Mr H-L’s father died on Friday. He waited until we popped out for lunch and we got the call whilst we were eating pudding. We toasted his memory with a glass of his favourite whisky.
6. I’ve got a bit behind with my sewing so spent all weekend up in my sewing room trying to catch up. It’s good therapy, too.
7. No, it’s not a dress, it’s the lining to my new green velvet coat!
8. Mr H-L has been keeping me supplied with refreshments. Not sure that red wine, Pringles and sewing are a good combination…
9. The hens decided that it was far nicer to be inside than wading around in acres of mud outside. They loathe the wind and rain and, if the door is left open for a millisecond, they’ll sneak in.
10. The dogs detest aren’t that keen on sharing their food with the girls so, as soon as they see a hen in the house, they race to their bowls and down the lot as fast as they can.
Sometimes not fast enough.
Right, back to the sewing room for me – just the hem and buttonholes to do!

Thanks! At least the lining is red too, so any spillage wouldn’t show:)

The wine matches the lining of your coat perfectly! Wonder if that’s why you subconsciously chose it?! And the hens, they look bigger than your dogs. Your eggs must be whoppers!! Big hug to the family, hope the boys are OK after the sad news. x

You’re right – perhaps that’s why red is my favourite colour?! The hens aren’t particularly big – it’s just that the dogs are small. The littlest, old one weighs just six pounds. Hug received and much appreciated:)

Sorry to read of your loss, a big Yorkshire hug on it’s way. Your sewing room looks fabulous! Your hens are cheeky monkeys, the dogs have my sympathy. Can’t wait to see your coat!

Thank you 😌 I love my sewing room as it’s totally my space and I don’t have to tidy away so others can use it. The hens rule the roost and often give the dogs a peck to remind them who’s boss!

Thank you:) I usually keep my sewing room free of all food and drink because I’m so clumsy, but all was OK this time.

A red lining on a velvet green coat? Delicious! What a pretty surprise that will be when you open your coat! And hens in the house? I had to share those photos with hubs and he found them quite amusing too. I’d like hens but we’re not home enough. I appreciate you sharing that gorgeous pheasant. They aren’t native to South Texas, and even in my world travels, I’ve never seen one in person…and you have one on your fence! Lucky you 🙂 Sorry for your loss. My sincerest condolences. Hugs rom across the pond.

I knew exactly what I wanted and I knew I’d have to make it, as a request for this in a shop would be met with scorn! The lining will make me smile every time I open my coat. Pheasants are everywhere at the moment and they’re not at all afraid of people (fools!). Our hens are funny, they love being with us whether we’re in the house or garden. One of them curls up in front of the fire to sleep!

So sorry to hear your news, and hope everyone will remember the happy times.
Cannot imagine chickens and dogs getting on too well, but notice dogs can make good feet warmers. Good thing there’s not pheasant added to that mix! (Jolly good colour on him!) Aw! So sorry about your sock prob. Can you alter a pattern just a wee bit, to avoid it in future? Am not a knitter, much less a knitter of socks, so please forgive total ignorance probably displayed by that query! Love the curtain solution for your sewing room windows, and all your nice cubbies, and will look forward to that new coat. A good treat for you. Much love to all & big hugs. 💕💕💕

Thank you Del:) The dogs and hens get on just fine apart from the food issue. The dogs follow me all around the house in the evenings until I sit down on the sofa with a blanket ready to knit or crochet, then they’re up on the blanket with me like a shot! Not sure how to make the sock longer in the toe so it will have to be darned for now. The curtains are on a pole top and bottom, which is the simplest solution for a sloping loft window, I think. It works well.

So sorry, Sheila, for your family’s loss. I know that your father-in-law was dearly loved, and I suspect he’d appreciate that special toast in his honor. Love the hens in the people house. Your sewing room looks divine, and the coat! Oooh lala, that is going to be something special. Cannot wait to see it.

Thanks Jen – yes, he was, he lived with us until his dementia made him too aggressive to have with The Boys around. In the Summer, I’m forever clearing up hen poo as they can’t be house trained!! Coat is finished, just need to take some photos tomorrow then it will be blogged:)

Sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you can fix your socks, they are a beautiful colour. Your sewing room looks fab, I would love a craft room one day…and I can’t wait to see your coat, if the red lining is anything to go by it’s going to look great!

Thank you:) I am determined to mend the socks as they are my favourite. Not sure how I can alter the pattern to prevent it happening in future, though, as it happens to all my socks quite quickly. I commandeered the loft space for my sewing room a couple of years ago and love it! The coat is finished and just needs to be photographed now.

Thank you:) The dogs are fine – it’s the hens you’ve got to watch! They do bully the dogs if they can get away with it. I only hope the coat lives up to everyone’s expectations now!

Red wine, Pringles and sewing sounds like a great combination to me. Love the hens sneaking in to steal the dogs’ food 🙂 looking forward to seeing the finished coat, the lining on its own does look like a dress.

Yes, but it’s asking for trouble having food and wine in close proximity to a sewing project! The hens are the bosses in this household and the dogs respect that in the main, although they have been known to steal the odd feather from a tail of a passing hen occasionally!

Your weeks always seem full of such lovely things or observations. I love the new pink hat and am sorely tempted to get my dusty needles out.
Sorry to hear about your loss but from what you’ve said it’ll be a sad relief for you all.
Are you having your op today? Hope the result is good. What a week. Make sure you put your feet up afterwards. Sending love. xx

I’m sat up in my hospital bed (in the luxury of a private room) knitting yet another bobble hat for myself, this time in raspberry to match my boots. Op was successful, thanks, and all is well. Just funeral arrangements to organise now!

I truely love your Sunday sevens post. The entire family have my deepest sympathies. I know Mr. H-L is hurting big time. 😦 Your coat already looks amazing and it isn’t finished yet. I can’t wait to see it in all it’s glory. I have a darning needle. Never heard of a darning mushroom. Your bright yellow socks are so lovely. I just adore your bobble hats. They rock big time. Yout cousin’s choice of color is beautiful. Darn I so wish I could knit. I have a white/cream color cape that would look awesome with a bobble hat!!!! LOL Do you have a price yet??!! I am thrilled that the family are happy with their belated christmas gifts. You are more than welcome. It really seemed like the oh-so-right thing to do. So much love sent to you and the family!! xxxxxxxxx

Thanks Robin, your support means a lot to me. Mr H-L is fine – we’re not famous for our “stiff upper lip” for nothing! You can find images of a darning mushroom in Google but, basically, it’s a mushroom shaped piece of smooth wood onto which you stretch the item you want to darn to make it easier. I’m pleased that you enjoy my Sunday Sevens. It’s funny, in a way, that little snippets of our lives can reach people all around the world in an instant. How times have changed. Your gifts continue to entertain The Boys and they are loving having their own calendar to fill in with just their activities:)
