Sunday Sevens #85

So this week’s Sunday Sevens focuses on the four days we had in London for our anniversary weekend. In common with many of you probably, it featured lots of good food and drink as we both fall in the ‘live to eat’ camp.

We also walked miles, despite having bought travel cards for each day as you see so much more by foot rather than going everywhere by tube.

Visit Nat at Threads & Bobbins to learn more about Sunday Sevens – anyone can join in.

1. We travelled up in time for lunch as guests at the members-only London Capital Club on the first day. Three lovely courses with aperitifs, wine, champagne and digestifs. Lunch started at 12.30 and we thought we’d have plenty of time to spare before our evening concert at 7pm.

Nope.

image

2. We left the club at ten to seven and ran all the way to St Martins In The Field where we were allowed to creep in quietly as the concert had already started.

The Thames Chamber Orchestra were playing Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony by candlelight which was magical.

image

3. We walked all the way back to Waterloo station via the Millenium Bridge, taking in a few sights by night and stopping in a bar before catching the last train back to the flat. For those outside the UK, you can just spot Big Ben at the top right.

image

4. Believe it or not, I’ve never actually been inside St Paul’s Cathedral before so we decided to go the whole hog and get tickets to the dome as well.

image

5. Over 500 steps later and we were rewarded with this panoramic view of the London skyline. Our knees weren’t quite the same for the rest of our break!

image

6. Our legs still wobbly from climbing all those steps, we hopped on a tube to get to Claridge’s in time for dinner.

image

7. The perfect evening which included Chateaubriand and more champagne. No wonder he’s got a smile on his face:)

image

8. This was a nice touch.

image

9. The following day and a trip to Liberty of London was top of my list.

image

10. I managed to kill two hours on the fabric floor alone whilst Mr H-L amused himself doing……..actually, I have no idea what he did for two hours.

image

11. Luckily, it was just a few steps to the pub next door where I sat down and stroked my purchases whilst enjoying a gin and tonic.

image

12. Two metres of ‘Lilac’ in the red colour way is destined to become a Summer dress, and the Art Deco print may well become a hexagonal sewing box for myself.

13. Here’s the pub shot for those of you who missed it last week, Mr H-L  propping up the bar.

image

14. We wandered through the backstreets and happened upon Carnaby Street which is not the hip place it was in its Sixties heyday.

image

15. I just ‘popped’ in to another fabric shop that we stumbled upon and, half an hour later, came out with this amazing silk viscose lightweight velvet. A Summer jacket perhaps?

image

16. Our last night was finished off nicely in The Archduke under the arches near Waterloo station.

image

17. Cocktails – the perfect end to our anniversary break.

image

18. On our return the next day, we found that every single one of our hens had been killed by the fox, Cock being the only survivor having a lucky break despite losing all his beautiful tail feathers in the struggle. No.1 Son had brought him in the house to recover, still unsure whether the shock would kill him, too.

image

19. Lost without his girls, he hobbled around in the garden calling for them – a pitiful sight to behold, poor thing.

So we went straight out and bought some more.

image

20. Happy as could be with his new harem, he fusses around them within the confines of the run for the time being. The fox was cheeky enough to show her face again last night until I ran out screaming and scared her off, so I’m a bit reluctant to let them free range just yet.

image

So, after only having lost two hens to the fox over the last four years, it’s time to get to know some new ones. Just four for now, and another four in a couple of months when we’ve made a bigger run. I’m looking forward to getting to know their personalities, although it’s sad and more than a little weird to no longer hear those familiar clucks as the old girls hopped in the back door and wandered around the kitchen.

No eggs for a few weeks either, as they’re not quite point-of-lay, although watch this space as one of them is a Chalkhill Blue and lays blue eggs!

  1. What a wonderful anniversary break! I lost my silkie bantams to a fox years ago and could not bring myself to get any more – good luck with your new batch – blue eggs sound fascinating.

  2. So sad about your garden ladies! Hope your efforts have seen the fox off for good and the new girls enjoy their indoor wanderings 😉
What an absolutely wonderful anniversary ~ so much good food, shopping and entertainment ~ look forward to seeing how the fabrics evolve 🙂

    • Thanks Abi, but the new hens are very sweet so I’m sure we’ll love them just as much in no time. Our break really was great and there was no way I was going to London and not going to Liberty!

  5. Happy anniversary to you both. It looks like a fun time away.

I’m sorry to hear that you returned to carnage. What an awful site. I’m glad Cock survived. How do you protect them from the fox? Does the fox sneak in or do the hens get out?

    • Thank you, it was lovely to get away with just the two of us. The foxes normally ignore the hens as there are so many rabbits in the fields. They have Cubs this time of year though, so couldn’t resist the urge to kill. There’s always a risk if you let hens roam free, but it’s one we’re prepared to take rather than keep them cooped up all the time. My son forgot to close the run after they went in to roost so it was easy pickings for the fox around midnight.

  6. That was a bit of a shock to hear about your poor hens. That must have been horrible to come back to especially after such a fantastic break. Loving your fabric selection -can’t wait to see those made up!

    • It did put a dampener on things but hey, that’s life if you decide to free range your hens – the risk is always there so you have to be pragmatic about it. I’m just searching for the right pattern for the dress, maybe a halter neck one:)

  8. So sorry to hear about the chooks. We’ve never lost any to a fox in fifteen years of keeping hens although 3 or 4 have been nobbled by dogs over that time. I look forward to seeing the blue eggs when she’s ready.
Looks like a lovely trip to London. Isn’t Liberty a treat to wander around – especially if it’s not too busy. For a minute I thought you were going to tell us you had not been able to resist the Liberty print sewing machine but when I saw you holding the bag aloft I knew it could only contain fabric.
Happy Anniversary – was it a landmark one?

    • We’ve only lost a couple to the fox until now, never the whole flock, but that’s the risk you take when you free range them. The fabric floor in Liberty is amazing – anything that can be made from Liberty fabric, is! It was our third wedding anniversary, so not long. It took us ten years to get around to it!

  9. Totally jealous of your London trip! I hope you can sew up all that beautiful fabric soon. I can’t believe what happened to your chickens though!! 😥 😥

    • We usually go abroad for our anniversary but thought we ought to make the most of having a flat in London while we’ve still got it. I still haven’t used all the Liberty fabric I bought when I was there last year…..

  10. Such a stunning and lovely trip. I want to thank you for taking to many pictures and sharing them, its like nearly visiting there as well. Its so pretty, I must really visit some day.
So happy you had a good anniversary, but sad to hear about the hens and the fox. Take good care of the new hens, I’m sure they will settle in just as soon. Looking forward to the first blue eggs as well, and of course, your latest creations with your gorgeous new fabrics.

  11. Fabulous weekend, Liberty is just sublime and the fabrics you have are beautiful! I bought some on a trip a couple of years ago, can’t bear to cut into them.

So sorry to hear about the chickens, how sad, poor things nature can be so cruel.

  12. Happy Anniversary 🙂 What a great break and fantastic looking food! So sorry about the hens, how frustrating, hopefully the new ladies will settle down and soon be free ranging and in and out of the kitchen too 🙂

  13. Your anniversary trip looked amazing. What fun! And I’m so sorry to hear about your hens. So sad. But it’s the circle of life I suppose. Too bad you can’t shoot that darn fox. That thing would be a fur stole if I had my way. We get coyotes (sounds like kai-oats in my part of Texas) on our cattle ranch and hubs really has to keep an eye out during calving season since newborns are easy pickings until about day 3. Do you have the space for a donkey? They don’t need much since they usually just stand there. Many ranchers here keep a donkey in the pasture to protect chickens and goats. They will stomp a predator to death to protect their “flock” (they’re too stupid to know they are not also a goat LOL). A bale of hay every 4-5 days and a water trough and that’s it. They are pretty self-sufficient. Noisy, but effective. 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you do with the gold! Pics of blue eggs please!

    • Well, we can shoot the fox, it’s just a matter of finding someone with an air rifle – as you know, there are no guns in the UK unless you’re a gamekeeper. No, we don’t have room for a donkey, just a large garden. Shame though, it sounds like a donkey would be perfect. We had our first egg today even though they shouldn’t be old enough to lay yet! Not a blue one though and I can’t wait to see one of those:)

    • We did, thank you, it was lovely. I’ve got a white streak on each side of my head – perhaps they’d look better blue?! We’re getting quite fond of the new hens already and the garden doesn’t feel empty any more. Belated birthday wishes to you:)

  20. What a lovely anniversary, but so sorry to hear about the hens. My neighbours lost all but one hen and one duck last year on a weekend they went away. I think the foxes must watch for when the activity goes down. I’ve had some beautiful blue eggs from their araucanna hens they fostered for a while. So pretty, I’ve taken some pics and plan to dye some wool the same colour. Hope your blue ones are as pretty.

  22. I’m so very sorry to hear about your hens – I love animals but hate how cruel nature can be. I am glad to hear you already have some new girls. I’m not sure how it’s possible to cheer up a cockerel but it definitely sounds like yours deserves some TLC ❤️
Apart from that, what a fabulous trip to London! I’m extremely envious of every aspect – it sounded amazing and your pics are great 😊

    • Nature is cruel, that’s for sure, but it’s all part and parcel of keeping hens, I suppose. Cock just needed some new girls to cheer him up, so job done! London was great, as usual, although it was nice to spend four days there instead of just a fleeting trip.
