Sunday Sevens #97

Sunday Sevens is a weekly blog series to give a glimpse of life outside the blog. To find out more, visit Nat at Threads & Bobbins.

1. Spotted this lovely filet crochet window dressing in a village local to us. I nearly got killed standing in the middle of the road determined to get close enough for a decent photo.

2. Remember this cushion that a student made with me?

3. She won ‘Best In Section’ at her village fete!

4. Love this photo of The Boys with their cousins at Stourton, Wiltshire.

5. A friend asked if I could lend her some vintage China – I didn’t realise I had so much and this isn’t all of it!

6. Another painting project – this is going to be transformed into a sink unit for our en suite.

7. We met up with some friends who were camping on Exmoor. It was 12 degrees at 1pm on 11th August so those crocheted blankets came in handy as we huddled around the fire!

8. The kids still went swimming in the freezing river though!

9. Glorious Exmoor. We will run a b+b there one day.

10. Our camping trip is coming up and my old hoodie has had it, so a new one is under construction. I loathe hoodies for their lack of any aesthetically appealing features, but they are a necessary evil if you want to stay warm when camping.

See what you think – I’ll blog about it later in the week.

11. I made a top for a little girls American Girl doll with the scraps, which led to a whole wardrobe of clothes being created. More photos to follow.

12. Gave hubby a much needed haircut.

That’s it for this week!

  2. I adore Filet crochet, what a beautiful example! The crochet blankets do come in handy! I with you on the hoodie – but camping and being warm are necessities!

  3. What a beautiful window dressing (LOL~ maybe not worth getting squished for ~ but do appreciate the capture) A truly fab cushion Your student did a wonderful job and very much deserves her award for a fantastic make. Hurrah…the British summertime and crochet blankets…a match made in heaven 😉

    • She was chuffed to bits with her first prize, and so was I – it does wonders for a child’s confidence. You can never have too many crochet blankets, especially when camping or sitting out enjoying the Summer!

      • A truly wonderful result, which , I’m sure, will stay with both student and tutor for life!
I agree…keeping warm on a British Summer’s evening will always need more crochet blankets ~ a great excuse to go yarn shopping…I reckon 😉

  5. Another glorious week. I think I am totally loving the idea of the cupboard transformation. So many ideas. Awesome. Looking forward to seeing your end use. 🙂
Well done to your student, she did an awesome job, and you are a great teacher. 🙂
I like the window, it is so pretty. Wish I had such small windows though. That is a lot of very delicate crochet.
Lol. You look strange with the hoodie, not how I would ever picture you, but for the sake of warmth it does makes sense.
Enjoy the rest of the week. 🙂

    • Small windows are a traditional feature in old houses over here as they let less heat out. Unfortunately, they also allow less light in, which means darkness can be a problem. Hurrah for double glazing and bigger windows! I hope the cupboard will make a great feature in the en suite; certainly no one else will have anything like it. The hoodie turned out well in the end, although I’ll never be a hoodie-type person:)

      • I love the small windows, you can do a lot with them to make them look pretty. We have loads of sunshine, and huge windows. My kitchen window is pretty wide, with dutch lace and draw down blinds for the afternoon sun. Cooking there in summer is pretty hot, as the sun sets in that window. I love to watch the sunsets though, and bear the heat. 🙂
I am really going to start looking for a similar cupboard for our bathroom, I love the ideas you have. It is going to look stunning, I just know it.
        Have fun. 🙂

      • Our house is newer (1930s) so our windows are quite big, too. We also have five sets of French windows which let the light flood in – I love it! There’s nothing better than rescuing an old piece of furniture and giving it a modern twist. I’m not a fan of built in vanity units, but the storage they provide is invaluable. This old sideboard will suit us much better. Glad to inspire you to do something similar:)

  6. Aww good for your little student. She deserved her prize. The pillow is beautiful. I love the material. I think your boys should have gills boy do they love swimming. The temperature of the water doesn’t matter to children. LOL I love the pic of you and the hoodie part of the jacket. You with your lip curled is priceless. 😀

    • Didn’t she do well with her first prize? I didn’t even know she’d entered it. The Boys are splashing about in the pool as I type this, making the most of the current spell of warm weather. The awful expression sums up how I feel about hoodies, although I actually quite like this one….

    • We’re still looking at b+bs; it’s a long process. The sink unit is half finished as I’m teaching a lot at the moment. Hopefully I’ll have more time when the kids go back to school.

      • You still manage to do a lot of things with the kids at home and I always have time managing problems with two kids. It’s amazing what you do and I hope that some day I can accomplish just the half of that! 😉

  8. That crochet is gorgeous. Well spotted. Sorry you had such a cold week for camping. Lovely to see Mr LH in his blanket – that did make me smile.

  9. I’ll bet you were as proud as if you were her mother when that little girl won first prize 🙂
I expect that ‘neighborhood watch’ had a field day with you risking life and limb to take a photo of a little window – I imagine the net (and crochet) curtains were twitching.
You are a mere amateur in the vintage china stakes. I used to make cake display stands out of it so have a cupboard completely full of cups, saucers and plates of every size.
As for camping – you can keep it, whatever the weather :/

    • Bah – humbug! The biggest kick from camping is seeing The Boys getting so much pleasure from it, which I remember well as a child myself. How could we deny them that just because we are older parents who might prefer a 5* hotel nowadays?! Do you still use all your vintage china? I might be a little bit envious. I have to admit to feeling a surge of pride when the cushion won first prize – wouldn’t be human if I didn’t:)

  10. Lovely window dressing – I’m glad you survived taking the photo!! What a fab achievement for your young student, you must be feeling so proud. That photo of the children swimming in the cold river made me laugh, they are all the same. Can’t get mine out of the sea even when it’s cold. 🙂
