Stag’s Head “Coco” Dress

So this is my new favourite dress!

I decided to make a “Coco” dress by Tilly and the Buttons and I’m so glad I did – it’s the perfect ‘everyday’ dress for Autumn.

    Yes, I agree! A photo with your granddaughter would be great! The dress is beautiful, and I agree with you 100%, Art Gallery Fabrics is my favorite brand to buy because they have such beautiful feeling knits. Love the dress!!

    Gorgeous dress! You can’t beat a Coco! I also get skipped stitches and tunneling when I sew with knits so it’s good to know that a seasoned pro like yourself has these issues too! Not that you can tell though!

      Thanks Corrine, I’m sure I’ll make more as it’s so easy to wear – and a good excuse to spend a small fortune on a coverstitch machine! There’s nothing quite like having the right tools for the job:)

    Love the fabric! Your stage placement is just perfect. Also love this the pattern (and it seems simple), but what if one has only a “plain ole” machine? Knits seem to frighten this ole girl…

    I have a funnel neck one, a colour block one, a striped one a plain one and one with oriental symbols on it but now I want one with stags’ heads. I know you’re psyching yourself up for a coverstitch machine but, until then, have you tried using a walking foot with the twin needle?

      Wow, seems I was late to the Coco party – you’ve made five already? They are so easy to wear, aren’t they, and I foresee a few more on the horizon. I haven’t tried a walking foot, no, as I rather foolishly sold mine with my old machine when I upgraded.

    Another Art Gallery knit lover here, and mustard is my fav colour this time of year. Did you try decreasing the tension a tad to help the tunnelling effect? And/or using your fav skinny fusible (or other) tape to give stability to the hem?
    Looks grand & no one’s noticing a hem!

      Thanks Del and you’re right, mustard is the perfect shade if you’re used to wearing brights in the Summer and can’t face the dingy greys and blacks for Winter. I did decrease the tension which always helps reduce tunnelling, but didn’t use tape on the hem. Will that help reduce tunnelling, too?

      Thanks Joey, the fabric is everything, I think, as the Coco is such a simple design that doesn’t stand out on its own. Mustard is the perfect transition colour from the brights of Summer to the muted shades we tend to wear in the Winter.

    Sheila I love this dress! The fabric is perfect and I know it is really comfortable. You did an awesome job lining up the heads. That is why I call you the designing queen. The pattern designer has a lot of comfy clothes and I hear they are easy to do. A friend on a knitting podcast made a shirt from one of their patterns.

      Thanks Robin and you’re right, the designer makes simple patterns with every step explained fully – perfect for beginners, which is exactly why I haven’t tried it until now! I will be making more though, as it’s such a great design. All you need is a bold fabric to make the most of it.

    At last I have had the chance to look at this post – and I love your dress. The style and fabric are lovely and it looks really good on you – no wonder you wore it all weekend!

    I was talking to my dressmaking teacher about double stitching this morning and she told me about the double needles. I don’t have an overlocker and think this would work very well for me on stretchy fabric. It was great to be able to see your comments on this so soon after learning about them this morning. Thank you Sheila x
