First Christmas Present Hot Off The Needles!

Exactly one month ago I popped into Sew Vintage in Wells, looking for nothing in particular and happy to just drool over all the lovely things on display.

Amongst all the yarns, I spotted some lovely self striping “Regia” sock yarn, designed by Arne and Carlos for Schachenmayr. There was also a pattern for knee-high socks complete with two labels to sew in to the finished socks. How cute? I couldn’t resist it, so bought both the pattern and four balls of yarn.

(I still can’t find any see-through wellies, though!).

When I got home and put on my glasses to read the pattern, I discovered that it was written for DPNS – and I only know how to use circulars. To be honest, I think I would have had a go on circulars if the instructions had been more straightforward, but they seemed overly complicated to me so I chose a pattern from “Coop Knits Socks”, by Rachel Coopey. I bought this book at Yarndale a couple of years ago and have made several different pairs from it already.

These are the “Brighton” socks and feature a stunning fair isle design in three colours. I decided to follow the pattern for construction without following the charts for the colourwork, so the style would be the same minus the fair isle – knee-high socks with a deep ribbed cuff.

That evening, I cast on using the long-tail method as usual for a nice, stretchy top.

I love my row counter which was gifted to me in a Stitching Santa parcel last year – it makes keeping track of where you are a piece of cake.

Of course, The Dogs like to be close by when Mummy’s knitting at night.

I’ve taken these in the car with me whilst The Boys play football. I love that socks are such a portable project.

I also LOVE this yarn!

The body of the sock is in stocking stitch and just look at how different the stripes look from the deep ribbing. The combination of colours are really lovely, too, and they’re quite accurate in this photo.

I tried it on for size just before I started turning the heel and this is when I noticed just how good the yarn is.

It’s quite expensive at £5.49 a ball, meaning that this pair cost £22.00 to knit, but they feel expensive, too, and surprisingly soft for such a high wool content (75% wool, 25% polyamide). As they are destined to be a Christmas present I felt it was worth it, especially after feeling how nice they felt against the skin.

One sock down and the second one almost finished, when I made a mistake and had to frog a whole evening’s work back. Poo!

Finally finished and ready to put away for Christmas – my first present made and it’s not Easter yet!

I’ve a feeling they’ll be worn over trousers as welly socks, hence my modelling them as such.

I’m very happy with the pattern matching as it can be tricky to find the exact spot in the ball at which to start the second sock.

As with all Rachel’s socks, the fit is absolutely perfect.

The extra deep ribbing will mean that the socks will hug the leg without slipping down.

Nice neat heels – the frogging was worth the effort!

Next up, some pink ones – another Christmas present in the making, but with some much cheaper yarn. I wonder if I’ll regret it…?

  2. SOME day I will attempt socks… but for now, yours will be some great eye candy for me to drool over! They turned out SOOO wonderful! If I could only be as on-the-ball (haha pun intended) as you are for already getting your Christmas projects started! ❤

    • Socks are a lot easier than you think they’re going to be, so give them a go! I’m making a few more pairs of knee-highs as gifts and they take about 3-4 weeks each (evenings only), so I need to start early for Christmas.

  3. I have tried knitting socks maybe half a dozen times now and simply can’t do it! I’m sock-knitting challenged!! These look superb and you make them sound superb too. I am sooooooo impressed with your Christmas making schedule 🙂

    • Thank you, but they look more impressive than the skill level might suggest. Have you tried YouTube for sock knitting techniques? When I first started I found them invaluable as books cant get information across in the same way.

      • I have tried YouTube Sheila. I’ve started bottom up, top down and crochet socks. All of them live in the bottom of the wip basket, a deep, cavernous thing of horrors. I think I’m just sock challenged. I’ll probably have another go at some stage and I’ll choose a pattern for idiots, if there is such a thing 🙂

  4. They look spectacular! You were using circular needles. DPN’s are the 4 short sticks. I can’t use them at all. Every time I drool over a pair of knitted socks I swear I will make a pair if it kills me!! Sorry I haven’t been around much.. my mom passed a week and a couple days ago. I feel like I am breaking but I am trudging along. Love to you and your lovely family!

    • Oh Robin, I’m so sorry to hear that – I know how much she meant to you. Sending you a huge hug from over the pond. I hope you have family and friends around to comfort you at this sad time. Wish I could be there to offer my support. Xx

  5. I am envious. The socks are beautiful and someone will love them this Christmas. I learned to knit in Girl Scouts years ago and then turned to sewing and quilting. You make me want to learn all over again. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks Anne, I was part way through them when a couple of people admired them saying that they’d love a pair, too, so the plan is to make a few more pairs yet! I learnt to knit over forty years ago but only mastered socks a couple of years ago. It didn’t take long to get the hang of it and they’re a nice project to have on the go.

  6. Those are lovely! I really need to learn to knit – crochet socks just aren’t the same… And I’m so jealous that you’ve got a Christmas present done all ready! 😉

    • I have to agree – crocheted socks aren’t nearly as nice as knitted ones. Knitted stitches are so much finer and that’s the difference I think. It does feel good to have a Christmas present in the bag already!

  7. Wowsa you’re on your game! I haven’t even finished the first hand-made birthday present I’m making this year!

    • Well, I can think of at least four people who would actually appreciate hand knitted socks so I’ll get those out of the way as soon as I can. Hopefully I’ll have more time to plan other handmade goodies then.

  8. Not only are the socks super impressive, but so is the fact that you have one Christmas present in the Santa Sack already. I have still to knit a pair of socks, some how they seem so scary!

    • YouTube is invaluable for sock technique – give it a go! A pressie in the bag already is a very good thing as I always run out of time nearer Christmas and never get time to make Christmassy things for the table and non-essential-but-pretty stuff.

  9. These look amazing Sheila – I’ve use Regina twice now for socks and each time I couldn’t get over how the almost fair isle looking pattern comes out and how lovely the colours are. The gorgeousness is even more obvious on your pair as they are knee length and somebody will be very chuffed to receive them at Christmas. I think I used DPNs once to make some fingerless gloves but I don’t like them so I always use a circular needle for socks and knit them two at a time as I am prone to single sock syndrome.

    • I’ve not tried knitting two socks at the same time, it looks a bit confusing. You’re right about Regia almost having a fair isle effect – it’s really lovely, isn’t it, and worth the extra cost. I’d love to make myself some, except my big toes go through the end of every sock I ever wear:(

    • Socks are just great to knit. They’re relatively quick compared to knitting a jumper, for example, so score high on the ‘satisfaction’ list. Of course, a great yarn like this is a bonus:)

    • I can’t sit down unless my hands are busy, so it’s not difficult to make a few pairs as presents. It’s surprising how much you can achieve with an hour knitting each night.

      • I hate not being busy but Little Miss keeps me occupied 🙂 I’m still managing to get a bit down though, I just have to accept the slower progress

  15. Oh My!! Already you’ve got your Chrissy Prezzies underway Well done You 😉 They’re beautiful and some lucky lady is going to be thrilled with them!! Your skills will make even a cheaper yarn into something spectacular I’m sure!! Good luck with the wellie hunting – looks like you may have a new lead on that 😉

  22. After the initial ‘wince’ at the mention of Christmas (in April for goodness sake!!!) I have to agree that your socks are gorgeous, and anyone would be proud to be considered worth knitting for. I have used the other yarn (Drops Fabel) and found it works nicely and is fairly hard wearing.
Forgiven for mentioning the C word so early in the year 🙂
