Sunday Sevens #123

This week’s Sunday Sevens is actually two week’s worth so may have just a few more photos than usual….

1. First week of the Easter holidays saw us spending some time on Exmoor as the warm spell continued. Mr H-L took a week off work so we decided to make the most of it while the weather was nice.

2. Tarr Steps is classified as an ancient monument and has a lovely circular walk starting and ending there that is one of the ‘must do’ walks every time we go to Exmoor.

3. One of the picturesque scenes for which the West Country is so famous.

4. This surely is the original chocolate box image?

5. The Boys had fun honing their stone-skimming skills.

6. No need to carry water bottles when you can drink water straight from the spring!

7. All that fresh air and exercise gave us an appetite for a cream tea.

8. Another day found us at a wetlands and willow centre on the Somerset levels.

9. A blustery selfie during the walk.

10. Tasty lunch back at the café afterwards.

11. Exhausted boys on the way home.

12. Closer to home, this picture was taken whilst walking the dogs in the next village. Don’t you just love the fields of yellow at this time of year?

13. Another day, another walk, this time featuring some inquisitive steers.

14. A pub lunch after the walk – it was so nice that we ate in the beer garden.

15. Plenty of opportunities to have the roof down in the last couple of weeks.

16. It’s not ALL been fun in the sun – the builders have finished the messy work so I spent a couple of mornings painting the sun room.

17. Back to the fun stuff – another barbecue.

18. Mr H-L took us out for lunch as he was going away on business for a few days.

19. The closest I got to doing any sewing last week was hemming the mister’s new suit trousers. Like most sewers, I loathe alterations of any kind and couldn’t even be arsed to change the overlock thread, so white it is.

20. The Husband looking dapper in The New Suit. Can you see the chain hanging from his waistcoat?

21. You know the way all the pockets in new suits are sewn up and you have to unpick them, well, as I was opening the smallest one we found a pocket watch sealed inside! Has anyone else ever found this before?

22. First night on my own was craft night at mine with the girls. I didn’t do much actual knitting as I was at the stage where I needed to concentrate on decreasing, but a new pair of socks has been cast on.

23. I gave The Boys a much needed haircut!

24.

25. No.3 Son needed new football boots and chose some gold ones. No surprises there, then.

26. Whilst he was at goalkeeper training (he’s made it into the advanced squad) I took No.2 Son out to a nearby pub for pie and mash.

27. Hubby bought me a lovely gift in duty free…..

28. …..my favourite perfume.

29. Meanwhile, I had been meaning to buy another blender since ours gave up the ghost a few weeks ago. This KitchenAid one was half price – bargain!

30. Quick drink in the pub after working up a thirst playing football in the playing field behind.

31. Progress on the socks went well as I relented and agreed to let them all watch Rogue One, the latest Star Wars film, in which I have no interest whatsoever.

32. My latest piece of sewing has been a real challenge this week. I’m making a denim-style jacket out of some sequinned, pearlescent leatherette. Yes, really!

33. I told you it was a challenge – before I’d even got to the sewing bit, I had blisters from cutting out!

34. A good friend stayed with us this weekend and we went out for Easter lunch today.

35. I was saved a job this year as the hotel put on their own Easter egg hunt after lunch and The Boys were happy to join in. I reckon the Easter Bunny would have been sweating his n**s off in this get up!

Linking up with Natalie at Threads & Bobbins for a somewhat extended version of Sunday Sevens.

  1. The fob watch thing is intriguing! But it’s a very natty suit and including a fob watch might be part of the sales pitch do you think? The boys look very grown up with their hair cuts – and personally I love the gold boots! And your jacket fabric choice 🙂 We all need a bit of sparkle and the family seems to have done very well in that respect this week – fabulous!!

    • The fob watch was only discovered after I cut open the pockets, so if it was a sales pitch, it wasn’t obvious! It’s a novel talking point though. I love the boots, too, and was quite pleased with his choice. A bit of bling is a good thing in even a goalkeeper’s life! Thanks for the haircut compliments – not perfect, but then I’m not a hairdresser and have learned as I’ve gone:)

  3. What a fab outdoorsy week! That cottage is beautiful. Lovely to see your makes in the pics too as part of your ‘everyday life’. Love the pic of you painting the ceiling 🙂

    • As you know, that part of the country is crammed full of cottages like these, but I think that particular shade of yellow limewash is limited to this small part of Exmoor, usually National Trust properties. One has to earn all those meals out you know, hence my painting the sun room – life isn’t all fun and games!!!

  4. I thought I was the only one who hated alterations. Why is it the first thing people ask you when they find out you sew? I hate saying ‘no’ but I rarely mend or alter anything I own myself let alone do it for other people – so I do say it.
How are you finding the Drops sock yarn compared to the lovely Regia? It certainly looks nice.

    • I’ve never been good at saying no – I have several curtains and blinds to make for a friend because I feel I should, and all for free! The Drops has the same yarn content but is far inferior to the Regia in terms of feel and the way it knits up. It proves the old adage “You get what you pay for”!

  5. I love the suit, it is so nice to see a man dressed well your hubby has a great sense of style! I agree with you about alterations though – sometimes they take longer than making something new – people have no idea what they are asking when they want something done.

Looks as if you had a great time on all your walks, I love the second picture, it looks a wonderful place to walk!

What a lovely gift, you are really well cared for! I adore channel perfume I am still a no5 girl myself!

    • He definitely doesn’t do “Dress Down Friday” when he goes into the City, and is always on the lookout for something different to everyone else in the suit/shoes/tie department! There’s something classic and timeless about Chanel perfume, I think, a bit like her clothes. I’ve learnt to direct people to the dry cleaner’s if they want a zip put in, as it’s one favour too far as far as I’m concerned – even for my best friend!

  6. This is one of my favorite posts! What awesome memories you are building with your boys. I bet the older siblings are somewhat jealous. As I was reading I was thinking, son #3 needs a haircut and then viola’! AND THEN…We share a love of the same perfume! It’s all I wear. I laughed out loud at not changing the overlock thread. Too funny. And girlfriend? Take it from this Texan, those are cows not steers. Steers are bulls who have had their n**ts cut off. At least the one giving the side view is a cow. 🙂 You’re a better woman than I with the paint roller. Loved all the countryside imagery. I could just imagine a knight or Robin Hood himself drinking from the same stream hundreds of years ago. Thank you SO much for sharing!

  7. Gorgeous pictures, super fortnight. The oil seed rape looks pretty but gives me hay fever. The boys look very smart with their haircut short. Am in awe of the sewing , that jacket is wonderful.

  8. Wow, what a great time, and the weather is really settling in well now too. So nice and warm and comfy to be outside again. Love the yellow fields, I think yellow is such a spring and Easter colour.
Great job on the sewing, sorry about your hands though. I think the finished item does make up for it.
The countryside is stunning, and thank you for sharing all your stunning pics with us. Loved seeing it all.
Have a great week ahead. Happy sewing.

    • I’m glad you like the photos of my little corner of England. It’s not ALL that pretty, of course, but this is typical of Exmoor and I can’t wait to move there. For the next year or so at least we’re only an hour away so day trips are easy. Sewing wounds have almost healed thankfully, although it was sore going for a bit. The finished jacket is so worth it and I’ll be prepared with plasters next time!

  9. Wonderful post ~ love the photos & your latest sewing project .
The chocolate box cottage is stunning I’d move there in a heartbeat …along with a million others no doubt LOL

  10. Lovely photos and grand times! Hope your blister is much better & await the project’s completion (hopefully with no more bodily damage. 😉). Had a good chuckle whilst reading about the discomforted bunny. . .

    • Blisters have healed, thanks Del, and the resulting jacket was worth the discomfort. It’s been a good couple of weeks – some warm sunshine makes all the difference to a day trip, doesn’t it? Except for that poor Easter bunny……

  11. What an amazing couple of weeks great pics and great times too The jacket looks amazing but such pain too!! Under their new hair cuts, boys 2 & 3 are growing up so fast, though looks like you can still tire them out on a good ramble! 😉

    • We’re certainly making the most of the sunshine at the moment and trying to have a few day trips with The Boys. Their haircuts make them look too grown up for my liking, but they were needed for the Summer. The sewing blisters are now mere scabs!

      • Your weather sounds much better than ours over Easter!! Children grow up far too quickly…though I’m sure that’s always been a mother’s opinion 😉 Glad your hands are on the mend!!

  12. Thanks for sharing your lovely family times: as an American who’s not yet made it to England, I also love seeing the beautiful countryside photos. Your family is beautiful, and you do very well with the boys’ haircuts. I’m looking forward to seeing your pretty jacket finished, or you could share your process with us, too!

    • Thanks Randi, it’s nice to hear that you enjoy seeing a little bit of England through my blog. I’ve been to California (San Diego, Malibu, LA etc.) but as America is so vast, I can’t pretend to know it well. The jacket will be blogged about in more detail in the next day or so – it was a challenging make!

  13. Oh looking good in his new suit, and I’m assuming those are his hand made shoes to go with it. I have never found a pocket watch but I have never really bought many mens suits :-p
It looks like you have been having a wonderful fortnight
