Sunday Sevens #133

Breaking the “rules” once again by posting on a Wednesday, here is this week’s Sunday Sevens. If you’re new to the concept, take a look at Nat’s blog, Threads & Bobbins, where you can find out all about it and how to join in.

1. Although I am no longer officially a Photographer, I was asked to photograph a friend’s granddaughter’s first birthday “Cake Smash”. Such a little sweetie, she doesn’t like getting her fingers dirty, which defeats the object somewhat – although she did put her whole face in it at one point!

2. At the birthday party afterwards in the local Village Hall, afternoon tea was laid on for about forty guests. Whilst plain white china was the order of the day, my friend presented hubby and I with our own ‘proper’ cups and saucers. I’m not sure what that says about us!!!

3. This was the official birthday cake – how amazing?

4. A rainy day when The Boys had friends around resulted in a good game of the perennial favourite, Monopoly.

5. Another rainy day keeping us inside gave me chance to make some Rhubarb and Ginger jam for the store cupboard.

6. We offered to snake-sit for a month whilst a friend is on holiday.

Look away now if you have Ophidiophobia…

7. A week in, and Flash shed his skin. One for ‘show and tell’ when they go back to school next week.

8. I had to crochet an extension to Fifi’s recently knitted coat. A flap at the rear to stop her licking her wound.

9. I incorporated a hole for her tail and it does the job to a point. We just have to remember to undo the flap when she goes out for a wee!

10. Off on holiday!

Of course, the downside to having less-than-sensible cars is that we need to take both of them when going camping in order to fit everything in.

It’s a compromise I’m happy to make:)

11. Home for the next four days.

12. A typical morning – Mum cooks breakfast whilst The Boys and Dad play cricket in their pyjamas.

13. Cafetière of coffee and tin replica bone china plates – who says you can’t camp in style?

14. The Dogs LOVE camping too.

15. Exmoor means lots of good walking to work up an appetite for those inevitable cream teas.

16. We forgot to take the dog carrier I made a while back but, luckily, there was a bric-a-brac stall in a nearby church that had one for sale for just £3.50.

17. Whenever Fifi started lagging behind, we could just pop her in the carrier for a while – perfect!

Trouble is, it took twice as long to walk anywhere as everyone just wanted to stop and cuddle her…

18. She also curled up on my handbag and stole a quick nap each time we stopped for a tea break.

19. Happily, our recent decision to go gluten-free didn’t impact us much when we ate out. So many more places are allergy aware in recent years that we had no problem finding something on every menu. This lemon drizzle cake was as good as a normal one.

20. And with local clotted cream on, it tasted even better!

21. We had lunch at a National Trust cottage in the middle of nowhere….

22. ….and even they offered GF bread and cakes, so no one missed out.

23. Another National Trust property which, although I’ve passed many a time, I didn’t realise was a shop as well.

24. Full to the brim with Exmoor-crafted goodies – I was in there ages chatting to the chap who leases it from the Trust.

25. Do you want to see what I bought?

This is a high-pitched dog whistle crafted from the antlers of an Exmoor Red Deer.

Fifi is almost totally deaf, but I was hoping that the pitch would be high enough for her to hear, the idea being that I could attract her attention if I needed to. She responds to basic sign language and will follow a finger to wherever it is pointed – if I can get her attention in the first place.

She can’t hear it AT ALL.

Still, it’s a nicely crafted souvenir – maybe I could train The Boys….?

26. Saw this beautiful but deadly Fungus on a woodland walk.

27. We spent our time swimming in the freezing rivers by day…

28. ….and walking on the pebbled beaches in the warm nights.

29. All in all we had a totally wonderful Bank Holiday weekend………..and not a drop of moisture fell from the virtually cloud-free sky the entire time!

Hope your Bank Holiday was as unusually dry, sunny AND warm as ours was:)

  1. What a wonderful week. Love the baby picture, you are very good! Impressed with the tin plates for camping. You do have style.

    • Thanks Cathy, I miss being a Photographer but do enjoy doing the odd shoot now and again. The tin plates are fab and look just like the real thing. Much better than plastic ones, anyway. Proof that you don’t have to sacrifice all home comforts when camping!

  2. I had a moment of panic until I read your opening sentence……. thought I’d lost several days out of my life 😀 You go glamping! Back in the 70’s when we went on family picnics I always took my crystal wine glasses and was thought somewhat odd for doing so. But you can’t have a glass of wine out of a plastic glass!! Now you can get pretty tine plates!!

    • Supposed to say ‘tin plates’ Sorry – more coffee required!

    • We didn’t get back until late Monday and, by the time all the washing and sorting out was done, it was Wednesday! Not sure I’d call it glamping as my expectations would be a lot higher, but nice plates and proper coffee are a step up from base level camping, that’s for sure. We take acrylic wine ‘glasses’ with us that everyone mistakes for real glass – you’re right, you can’t drink wine out of a plastic beaker:)

  3. I love baby cake smashes. That Alice in Wonderland cake is amazing! Your dogs sweater is amazing and cute 😂 and yes please train your boys with the whistle and let me know how it goes bc maybe I’ll get one to train my girls 😉

    • Cake Smashes are a relatively new concept to me, but they’re a bit of fun and babies seem to love them – unsurprisingly! I think it would take more than a whistle to train The Boys, although they are trained to come running when they hear the gong. Yes, I really do have a dinner gong so I don’t have to shout anymore:)

  4. Please tell this Texan what a Bank Holiday is. Looks like you had a fabulous time!! That fungus is like something out of an old fairy tale.

    • A Bank Holiday is the colloquial term for a Public Holiday, that’s all. We did have a great time, thank you. We rarely see those fungi – pretty, but very poisonous, although I can’t remember the name of them. Looks like it needs a little gnome dangling a fishing rod from it, doesn’t it?!

  5. It seems to me that you are all enjoying life to the fullest. I’m glad to hear the weather cooperated and that you could enjoy all three days outdoors. That is an amazing tent! My goodness that would be fun.

    • Well, we’ve certainly made the most of the Summer holidays, that’s for sure. No.2 Son goes to boarding school on Sunday, so we wanted to spend lots of time together as a family before he effectively leaves home. It made so much difference to have good weather – not to be taken for granted in August! We are used to camping in rain so always have a tent that is large enough to spend lengthy periods in without tripping over each other.

  6. You can’t beat an English bank holiday when the sun’s shining can you? – although I don’t do tents. Looks like you had a great time. What made you go gluten free? Is that the boys too? Do you feel better for it?

    • I’m sure no one told the weather Gods that it was a Bank Holiday!! I must admit to still getting incredibly excited about sleeping under canvas and have passed this onto all the kids. Hubby and I often have spells of going GF, and always feel better for a period of abstinence. We just concluded if our bodies are talking to us then we should really listen and go the whole hog, so to speak. No, The Boys eat a normal diet as they seem to be fine with it.

  7. Awesome long weekend, and so much to see and do and get to. Of course, with perfect weather. I am glad to see it was enjoyed by all, and you are so cool when doing it in style. 🙂
All the best with the pet sitting. I’d pet sit, as long as they are pretty furry rather. Will be a great show and tell again.
Lovely cakes, and such a cute little baby.
Enjoy the rest of the week, and I hope the weather is still playing along.
    🙂 Have a good one.

    • Whilst we love sleeping under canvas, we do like a few home comforts. We always take our feather duvet and pillows, for example – no draughty sleeping bag for me, thank you very much! Hubby refuses to handle the snake, but I’m pretty easy about it. They’re not great pets, though, as they don’t actually DO anything. Nocturnal, too, so they’re asleep all day. Whilst he’s been no problem, I won’t miss him when he goes home. It’s warm but wet here at the moment, so pretty typical for England:)

      • 🙂 Makes me think of what I always tend to say: “can i take my room” when we go to the more off the beaten track places. I can survive as long as I can take my pillows from the bed. I tend to be pretty okay if I can sleep properly.
The snake is cute. I recall my sister having one many many years ago as a pet. The feeding was what got to me. Could not do that. Luckily she is now a dog person too. 🙂
Enjoy the weather, as much as is possible. It is a lovely Spring day here and we have just decided to make it a half day at the office to rather go and enjoy the lovely sunny weather. 🙂

  9. Wooo! So many pictures! I think you should start a daily sevens. You certainly picked the right weekend for camping – but how did you survive without the best china? 😉 Lovely to see Fifi having such a good time. Definitely an advantage of being a small dog. Love the ‘real’ birthday cake and how funny that she wouldn’t put her hands in it, but happy to dunk her whole face 🙂

    • We’ve been away for four weeks out of the last five so have accumulated lots of photos as we’ve done so much. You should see what I missed out!! We always take a few home comforts camping with us; posh tin plates, acrylic wine glasses, cafetière, feather duvet and pillows. All the essentials, you understand. Fifi is back to normal for the time being – you wouldn’t even know she’s been so ill. Mind you, both she and Tess absolutely love camping, so that will have perked her up no end.

      • You certainly look like you’ve had a busy and fabulous summer. No wonder you need two cars. Great to hear Fifi is feeling herself again 🙂 Dogs are such sociable creatures and I’m sure taking her camping helps boost her health.

  10. Oh it looks like you have had a wonderful week. I haven’t been camping in ages, I keep thinking about doing it again maybe next summer…

  11. What a wonderful trip! Full of joy! Let us know how things work out with the whistle and the boys! Why didn’t I think of that! 😀

  12. An amazing holiday and memories! I just love Sunday Sevens for keeping a record of everything. And yes taking 2 cars is a small price to pay. I remember when we used to take my sisters 2 kids with us camping, we’d take an estate car and a transit van!
