Sunday Sevens #155

Sunday Sevens is a weekly blog series showing your week outside the blog.

1. On the drive home from our girl’s weekend away in Cornwall, we stopped in this café in an old bus for coffee.

2. While we were away relaxing in a hot tub, Mother’s Day came and went. I opened my suitcase to find this card from No.3 Son – “Happy 27th Mother’s Day” referring to the age of his older sister. It took me a while to work that out! No idea why he’s written “Joe” on it, as that’s No.1 Son’s name – love it!

3. Meanwhile, back home, No.2 Son was back at school, but he had made me this lovely mug, painted both inside and out with nice things.

4. And underneath……!

5. A day out in Bath with my daughter for our birthday – but no photos as I left my ‘phone at home (again) and she STILL hasn’t sent me the photos she took. (If you’re reading this H-R, consider it a reminder!) This was taken the next day at our new favourite café. Yes, Tess is curled up in front of the wood burner as usual.

6. I finally found a pair of navy boots that I quite like so I bought them as they were half price and I love a bargain:)

7. We popped into The Trading Barn just outside Wincanton which supports local makers and traders.

8. I love Tamsin G’s work – check out her shop on Folksy.

9. Our Thursday Knit ‘n’ Natter includes this brave chap who was knitting socks. Check out the ones he’s wearing…..

10. ….I recognised them immediately as the Saxifrage pattern by Rachel Coopey that I have recently knitted in purple. How geeky is it to admit/know that?!

11. I haven’t had time to do much in the way of crafty stuff this past week ‘cos I’ve managed to stretch out the birthday celebrations for ten days, but I did get around to joining the first forty squares of this blanket.

21. Every maker’s dream – knitting books and knitted bits and bobs from my late grandmother were passed onto me to enjoy.

22. The Big Party!

23. I had not one, but TWO fantastic birthday cakes!

24. Far too many photos to share here, but here’s one with my sister who, at just eleven months older, is also 50!

25. Did you spot the necklace in the previous photo? This was from some yarn-mad girlfriends – they know me well and noticed all the love I’d given it on IG, so went and bought it for me! If you want your own (who wouldn’t), you can buy it here.

26. The morning after, we woke up to more snow.

27. There was nothing for it so, whilst waiting for the roads to clear enough for everyone to drive home, we walked to the pub with obligatory snowball fights en route.

28. Brother-in-law was targeted!

29. Refreshments and a warm up before walking home again.

30. No.3 Son curled up by the wood burner with Tess, still tired after such a late night.

31. This face was the result of a huge lick across the face from the new pub puppy.

The husband would quite like to get another dog as Tess is still missing Fifi’s company, but I’m not at all convinced, so watch this space….

  1. You always pack such a lot of wonderful stuff into your weeks Sheila – thank you for inviting ue all to join you! Happy Birthday!!!! Looks like you celebrated in style – love that red dress!!! Just right for the birthday girl, who is also a sock geek ! Ha!! I haven’t met many of those.
Re getting a pal for Tess – a tricky one – I thought that when one of our cats died, but the remaining cat made the new kitten’s life a misery and never accepted it – not sure if dogs are as territorial – I expect it depends on the breed.
I have a sneaking suspicion you might give in though 😉

    • We got Tess four years ago to make losing Fifi easier when the time came. Tess absolutely adored Fifi, but it wasn’t reciprocated as Fifi had been happy on her own for eleven years. It’s a tough call, but my instinct is to let Tess have her time in the limelight for a few more years.

  2. A very happy belated birthday – it looks like you had a ball!
Amazing birthday cakes and the necklace is perfect for you.
I can see Mr. H-L was getting broody with the pub puppy but I know what you mean when you say you want to let Tess have you all to herself for a while. Some dogs need company – especially if they spend much time alone in the house – but it seems as if you include Tess in everything you do so she’s probably satisfied with her human pack (for now at least 😉 )

    • Thank you and, yes, I stretched the limits of my birthday celebrations to the max! I don’t go ‘out to work’, so Tess has the (dubious) pleasure of my company 24 hours a day and is not in need of doggy companionship, in my opinion. Especially while still mourning Fifi, but never say never.

  3. Wishing you a very very happy belated birthday! You obviously had a ball. Love the necklace, and the handmade card and mug for mothers’ day.
So many gorgeous photos! Especially those boots. Beautiful colour. The pup is my favourite pic, of course! Are you feeling not ready for another dog, or two is too much? I’m missing Mr Hicks heaps – of course – and missing having a dog, but also feel really disloyal at the moment even discussing having another dog. My hubby started on do we ever want another dog and is now on ‘Please can we have another dog’! 🙂

    • Thanks Bekki, I got away with as much celebrating as is humanly possible at my age (haha!). I think Tess deserves some time alone as she was always very much in Fifi’s shadow and would be again if we had another dog. If we lost her, though, I wouldn’t hesitate in getting a puppy as, to me, a house isn’t a home without a dog or two 😀

      • Ha ha! You looked like you were.
Sounds like you know what’s best for Tess 🙂 Not that I ever doubted that.
I do agree, a dog makes a home, but I can’t quite bring myself to move on yet. Plus I also need to think hard about what sort/size of dog we have – my foot problems say a small one, but I want a big one!

  4. There are so many doggies needing homes that should you decide yes, someone will be made very happy! Happy Birthday! You certainly made the most of it and why not!! It’s lovely to see the brave male in your knit group, did he do much nattering I wonder 🙂 the socks on his feet/sock on his foot looks very nicely knitted.

    • Thank you Pauline, I am of the opinion that reaching a new decade is worthy of a huge celebration, particularly as I lost my dad in his Fifties. We probably will consider another dog in the future, but will let Tess be the centre of attention for a while yet. Our token man didn’t get a word in edgeways amongst a dozen women – but you’d already guessed that😂

  5. Happy Birthday, but you don’t look old enough for that cake to be correct. Love that you have a chap who is knitting, that he made his own socks and that you recognised the pattern! Nice boots too.

    • Thanks Cathy, but I do have a few grey hairs now and middle aged spread definitely has well and truly taken hold! I knew I was a sock knitting geek as soon as I recognised those socks, but he appeared to be thrilled to talk about them and took off his sandals immediately so I could photograph them properly!

  10. What a Week!! So much happening and going on and even still snow!
I am so glad you had such a wonderful time for your birthday, and got such stunning gifts. Absolutely gorgeous.
Fifi seems content and quiet and happy to have wood burners wherever she goes. I think she may perk up with warmer Spring days too. 🙂
I love the Trading Barn, and your boots are perfect.
Enjoy the rest of the week.

  11. Sorry, I am terrible. I called her Fifi. I am so used to Fifi, she was such a cutie. I guess I still think of her often in my mind. 🙂
It is great to have a special birthday, and celebrate it over a few days too. It only happens once. Have a wonderful year, and celebrate the next one just as well. 🙂
