Sunday Sevens #83

Another Sunday – another Sunday Sevens; a weekly blog series organised by Nat at Threads & Bobbins to show a glimpse of your life outside of the blog in about seven photos. It’s 83 weeks since my first Sunday Sevens post – where did that time go? Anyway, onto this week’s photos.

1. As my boy students make a backpack for their first project (unlike the girls who make a drawstring sewing bag), one little boy was using a plastic carrier bag to store his current WIP. I asked him if he’d like me to make him a sewing bag from the fabric he had leftover from making his PJs, and this is what I made for him

  

2. Very few villages around here have their own Post Office nowadays, the majority having reverted to residential use during the last couple of decades and renamed “The Old Post Office”, however we DO have a mobile Post Office that comes to the next village every week. It was a lovely day, warm and sunny, and the clerk was sat outside having a cup of tea in the sunshine. He was happy to pose for a photo.

  

3. I bought these vintage candlesticks in our local charity shop, one of two pairs for sale. I went back the next day and bought the other pair, too:)

  

4. No pub this week, but it was warm enough to sit in the café garden at Divine Wines.
  

5. This is my April make for the Minerva Crafts Blogger Network.

  

6. I decided that the windows were just crying out for some added detail, so added my own embellishments to the pattern.  

7. That’s all I’m showing you for now – the full blog post will be out on Wednesday!

8. This dog’s water bowl lives on top of the wall of a villager who doesn’t even have her own dog. She fills it with fresh water for anyone to use. That’s one of the many nice bits about village life:)  

  

9. Our White Leghorn, “Snow White”, is turning out to have quite a character. She followed Mr H-L’s every move with the spade in the hope that he would dig up a tasty morsel.
  

10. The hens loved the newly turned ground and spent a good couple of hours dust bathing in it.

 

11. We stayed in London on Friday night after the memorial service for my father in law, and spent the night in his flat. Having cancelled the TV licence after he moved into a nursing home, we could only watch a DVD, so I worked on my lacy cardigan whilst The Boys watched “The Bridge at Remagen”.  

12. A cheeky bit of Sunday shopping in TKMaxx – a rare occurrence indeed. A bistro set was on the list, initially for the terrace at the flat to look good in the estate agent’s photos, but afterwards for the balcony outside our bedroom at home. I didn’t find anything I liked enough to buy, but this one was quite cute.

  

So that was my week – I managed to crowbar quite a bit of sewing and knitting in inbetween the other things we had going on and more is planned for next week, hopefully, so a few blog posts should follow:)

Sunday Sevens #82

1. Mr H-L brought me up breakfast in bed complete with a ‘vase’ (whisky bottle) of flowers. Fifi is still curled up at the end of the bed. She is spoilt and has always slept on our bed – Tess sleeps downstairs and sulks every night at bedtime.

  

2. N0.3 Son bounded in mid-breakfast and proudly showed me what he was making downstairs.
  

3. My sister came to stay and we ended up in the pub after a nice walk. At the time we were the same age, but it was her birthday yesterday and she is now a year older than me:)

  

4. My favourite hen, Amber, was weak and not her usual confident self and all the hens were bullying her again, so we brought her into the house to live whilst she regained her strength.
      

5. Unfortunately, she didn’t recover and died peacefully one evening. She had such a great personality and has featured in many a blog post. We miss her dreadfully already.
 6. I held a Bunting workshop – here are the kids enjoying a half time treat.  

7. A couple of photos of what was achieved in the four hour class – pretty impressive for eight year olds, don’t you think?  
8. This little girl made her bunting for her little sister’s birthday present – how sweet?

 9. These patchwork squares came free with a magazine – any ideas as to what I could do with them?   
10. Yet another charity shop bargain – two brand new tea towels for 50p each. Not sure what I’ll make with them, but they were too pretty to leave there.

 So that was my week – The Boys are back to school on Monday so I might actually be able to get some sewing done as it feels like ages since I’ve done a ‘proper’ blog post!

Sunday Sevens # 82

1. The girls made rag dolls in a workshop this week.

  

2. The boys made superhero bunnies!
 

3. Whilst No.3 Son was at a football camp in Taunton, we took No.2 Son for a walk at Combe Sydenham country park. We found a lovely pub, The Notley Arms in Monksilver, but forgot to take a photo.
  

4. Sneak peek of the guest bedroom redecoration project – now completed and a blog post will follow.
  

5. We were invited to lunch by a family member who has a farm and her little border terrier decided that Mr H-L made a very comfortable cushion.
  

6. Mr H-L and The Boys recorded the scores of the T20 final the old fashioned way.
  

He even downloaded a proper score sheet – what a nail biting game that was!
  

7. Homemade sun dried tomato bread, proved in the sunshine on the back of the sofa and ready to be baked.
  

8. Remember the little vintage sewing table that No.1 Son bought me for my birthday/Mother’s day? He painted it and I added a bit of bling in the way of a touch of gold paint.

 

9. The hand painted lines are very wobbly but I like them that way. A bit of gold paint was dry brushed onto the dull knobs, too, just to brighten them up a bit.

 

10. In use at last! I love it. Perfect for storing bits and bobs for hand sewing in the lounge and means I don’t have to hike up to the sewing room in the loft for a needle and thread. 

11. And finally……we drove past this truck transporting a greenhouse frame and spotted it on the front page of the local paper this weekend!

Sunday Sevens #81

1. No. 2 Son went to Kilve Court for four days with the school and braved all the teasing about having my pink suitcase! (No.3 Son had a pirate day at school).image

2. The postcard we received from Kilve – cheeky little beggar! image 3. A lovely lady in the village picked a posy of flowers from her garden for me. How nice?!

4. Mr H-L and I shared a seafood platter at the pub – it was lush!image

5. Fifi had prime position in the pub window. She loves to watch people walk by.image

6. Bagged these two bargainous ‘as new’ books from the charity shop. I bought the DIY one for No.1 Son only to find out I’d already bought him the same book some weeks ago:)image

7. This amazing cross stitch was going for a song in the same charity shop so I snapped it up.image

8. Just £6.50 for all that work – criminal.image

9. I reckon there’s at last a year’s hard labour gone into that.image

10. After a glorious day on Good Friday on which all the french windows in the house were flung open all day, the rain came on Saturday. It didn’t stop The Boys playing cricket in the garden, though.image

11. We spotted two pairs of extra long full length curtains in a second hand shop, originating from some grand country house or other. image

12. A considerable investment but a bargain at the same time. All interlined and lined, they’re such good quality that they’re going to be dry cleaned and stored until they find a new home in our future B&B.image

13. We stayed with my brother at the weekend and had cocktails down the pub.

14. On the way home we were faced with cattle walking on the road through Burrington Combe – not a usual occurrence and they were lucky not to be hit.

15. Mr H-L and No.1 Son started stripping the wallpaper off the walls in our guest room. We haven’t decorated it in nearly ten years and it was looking a bit tired to say the least.

Well, that was part of my week, although I’ve got lots more to share in blog posts of their own to follow soon, including progress on the guest room decorating front. Talking of which…..back to the sanding down!

Sunday Sevens #79

It’s Sunday again – where did THAT week go? Well, I’ll show you in this week’s Sunday Sevens – a weekly blog series devised by Nat at Threads & Bobbins to give readers a glimpse of what you do outside the blog in about seven photos.

There are no rules, which is just as well or mine would have to be renamed “Sunday Twelves” most of the time. It’s easy to join in, so visit Nat to find out how.

  1. It was my birthday last Sunday, as previously mentioned and, because I share my birthday with my daughter, we went out for lunch on Monday to Summer Lodge in Evershot. It’s my favourite place – and now my daughter’s, too:)

2. The food was amazing as always and we even both had flowers, a birthday card and box of chocolates given to us by the hotel!

3. My daughter bought me a gorgeous Lamy fountain pen in pink……

4. ….and a bottle of 24K Prosecco!

5. Progress on my lacy cardigan is slow which means there’s no way it’s going to be finished for Spain in May:(

6. No.1 Son has finished painting the sewing cabinet he bought me for Mother’s Day/ Birthday. It’s much better but I still feel it needs something more. A bit of gold leaf maybe, to tie in with the gold cording on the inside?

7. To quote Hot Fuzz – “What d’you wanna do?” “I dunno……pub?”

8. Just LOOK at the size of those (empty) bottles of wine!

9. On the walk home from the pub, we spotted these deer grazing in the middle of the afternoon.

10. Our lovely cleaner hoovered the (not inconsiderable) dust from every single one of the buttons on our antique French bed. I wouldn’t have dared showing you what it looked like before!

14. And finally, I whipped up some sample bunting for one of the Easter Workshops. It will also be a late Easter present for our granddaughter:)

  1. Fifi curled up on the sofa next to a ball of wool and it struck me how tiny she looks in comparison.

10. We went straight from their riding lesson out for a walk with the dogs and The Boys did all the usual boy stuff with sticks picked up along the way.

Sunday Sevens #75

Time for another Sunday Sevens as organized by Nat over at Threads & Bobbins – seven(ish!) photos of your week outside the blog.

Well, I haven’t even turned the computer on this week and have a lot of blog reading to catch up on. Here’s my (very busy) week in pictures.

  1. Pancake day was celebrated the traditional way with lemon and sugar pancakes.

2. The Hens have started laying again after the Winter. They give us an abundance of different coloured eggs which get very dirty this time of year!

7. The selection of 27 local cheeses was incredible!

8. Went to Wells farmer’s market with Mr H-L who is off work at the moment with stress. Days out were prescribed by the doctor, so this was our first one.

Sunday Sevens #74

In the West Country the weather was awful this week and both the Saturday and Sunday football matches were cancelled. The dogs refused to set foot outside the front door and No. 2 Son didn’t want to go to the stables either which meant we had a rare weekend with both of The Boys and Mr H-L at home. This gave us the opportunity to do indoor ‘stuff’ (which doesn’t include technology) and I didn’t even turn my computer on – a reasonable excuse for my Sunday Sevens being late!

  1. Daughter paid us a brief visit to collect her bobble hat, much needed in this weather.

2. Mr H-L and No.1 Son worked from home a couple of days this week and this is what I rustled up for them at lunchtime. No wonder they’d rather not go into the office!

3. I spotted these beautiful crocuses (not ‘croci’ as it’s not derived from Latin!) on a dog walk at the beginning of the week before the dogs vetoed any further walks.crocuses

4. The dogs hate the wind and rain so much and this photo says it all really. Fifi climbed up onto the hearth and stared at us until Mr H-L obliged her by lighting the fire!Fire dog

5. I managed to finish this month’s project for the Minerva Craft Blogger Network -a fur gilet with gold Paisley lining. A full blog post will follow next week.fur gilet

6. I adapted the bobble hat pattern to make a beanie for No.1 Son in his requested colour, Olive Green. One row of cables was dispensed with so the hat was less pointed and more rounded like a beanie should be.green bobble hat

7. I was given this set of notebooks for Christmas, but they are so lovely I can’t bear to use them! They each feature a different vintage McCall’s pattern envelope on the front and back covers.sewing pattern notebooks

9. Yet another bobble hat was cast on, this time in navy blue for a birthday present for a good friend. Navy is NOT a great colour to knit with in the evening.

10. How do you get from a skein of wool to a yarn cake?skein and cake

11. With a swift and yarn winder, of course! I treated myself to this quality wooden swift a couple of weeks ago to give Mr. H-L’s arms a break. swift

13. I’m still managing to squeeze in a few rows here and there on the scarf to match my pink bobble hat which I made to match my Raspberry Pink boots:)cable scarf

Sunday Sevens #73

  1. I ordered some more gorgeous wool by Juniper Moon Farm to make a matching scarf for the bobble hat I made myself last week.

2. It’s my own design so I’ll share the pattern if anyone’s interested.

3. More yarn arrived in the post, this time with two faux fur pom poms which are OK but nothing like as fabulous as the real fur ones from Toft. At just £2.95 for two though, they are good value compared to £8 each for the Toft ones.

4. Brown bobble hat (as requested by my daughter) already finished!

5. Beanie well underway for No.1 Son in his choice of olive green.

6. We had haggis for Burn’s night. It never looks particularly attractive but we love it the traditional way with neeps and tatties.

7. Saw lots of snowdrops in full bloom whilst walking the dogs.

8. Managed to grab this rubbish photo on my ‘phone of a kestrel that likes to perch on the shed roof. We get loads of birds of prey in the garden as we back onto open farmland – you should see the size of the buzzards!!

9. My son’s not the only one with an eye for a bargain – I snapped up this pretty little cabinet in a charity shop for £30. It’s going to house some of my vintage china.

10. The local parish magazine did an article on ‘entrepreneurs’ and invited me to put a piece together about my sewing school.

11. The Boys have progressed to jumping. Freddy’s little pony thinks he’s a show jumper and clears the tiny jumps with a foot to spare!

Sunday Sevens #72

Sunday Sevens is a weekly blog series devised by Nat at Threads & Bobbins whereby you share seven photos of your week. It’s a great way to keep blogging when you don’t have enough for a full blog post and we all get to know a bit more about the person behind the blog. Simple!

  1. Earlier this week I finally had the surgery that had been cancelled on New Year’s Eve because they lost my notes. All went well and I even managed to cast on another bobble hat!

2. This gorgeous bouquet arrived “on behalf of all your friends in North Cheriton” – how lovely?

3. Home alone for lunch, this is my favourite way to use up ripe avocados.

4. Three down, two to go……it seems that everyone now wants a pom pom hat!

5. I WILL make time to transform this fabulous Alpaco/Silk laceweight yarn into a Summer cardigan in time for Spain in May.

6. Mr H-L and I went for a pub lunch in The Nog Inn, Wincanton. The dogs instantly curled up in front of the wood burner. I made Mr H-L put his lovely wool coat on the flagstones for them to lie on:)

7. These camouflage trousers are a sample to show my eight year old boys what they will be making after they finish their back packs. Do you think flap pockets are a bit ambitious for a second-ever sewing project? That’s the great thing about kids – if you tell them they can do it, they believe you and just get on with it!

8. You haven’t seen one for a while, so here’s a typical lesson underway. There are usually four in each class, but sickness has claimed a few recently.

9. Saturday morning and these two landed on the doormat! Time for a break.

10. Brunch this morning. Don’t even think about mentioning the rights or wrongs of wine before midday. And who has heard the latest about black pudding being considered a superfood? Yay, recognition at last!
